American demand for mahjong is booming, and tile makers in Taixing, China, are profiting. Workshop owners like Wang Hao and Zhu Xingyao have shifted to producing colorful acrylic sets for U.S. buyers, who pay $300 to $400 per set that costs about $30 to make. The boom offsets weak Chinese domestic consumption and fierce local competition, though makers expect the opportunity to shrink as more competitors enter.
