Article Context
The Justice Department has issued grand jury subpoenas to employees of the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder's office, part of its push to identify noncitizens on California's voter rolls. It follows DOJ letters warning local officials of legal exposure if they process ballots of people flagged as likely noncitizens. A federal judge recently rejected the DOJ's demand to set aside those ballots, calling the 20,000-name list unreliable, and the DOJ is appealing. It is unclear whether subpoenaed employees are targets of a criminal investigation.
